I bought a cpu fan/heat sink combo that was described as a replacement for the one in my Dell Inspiron 580. However the new one has push pins while the old one has captive screws. Can I use the replacement by forcing the push pins into the old screw holes? They seem too small. Or is there another solution? Thanks in advance.

If it's got captive screws, there may be a backplate on the board. Remove that and it should fit.

I have now removed the motherboard and examined the back. Beneath the CPU socket is a metal plate that has a hard rubber construct surrounding it that holds the four receptacles for the captive screws on the fan. I have removed the rubber constract (it was only glued to the metal plate) and the holes are now larger and I think they will now accommodate the push pins. Thank you for your help.
