Overheating CPU Suddenly

Hi All,

I have got a problem with a rig I built a couple of years ago and recently moved into a bigger tower because the old one was a bit battered and i needed some front USB ports.

Before the move I was playing games, running lightroom, running premier pro and a lot of other processor heavy apps without ANY problems at all. And suddenly after the move, temperatures are soaring and I'm getting BSOD's all over the place.

I think I managed to solve the BSOD problem (the codes kept coming back as 124 so took everything out and started again... oddly, it seems the 4-pin to 6 pin PCIex adapter was causing it: as they use 2 4-pin pugs to go to one 6 pin, they shouldn't be plugged into plugs running from the same cord... at least that seems to have stopped the BSOD) but I'm still getting massive temperature issues.

I have 3 chassis fans on top front and back running at 1000rpm and a cool-master heatsink running at 1800rpm. When I run prime95, the temp ROCKETS to 75 almost instantly and keeps going at which point I turn it off and panic.

Right now I have the tower on its side, open, with an external cooler fan pointer DIRECTLY at the CPU. Prime95 has now been running for 20 minutes and the CPU has levelled off at around 69 but is still edging upwards.

Having run Prime95 for 20 mins with no BSOD I'm feeling I've solved that issue, but with temps at 70 with the whole build open and a fan pointed at the heatsink there HAS to be another problem I'm missing?! I can't seem to work out why this wasn't a problem before the new tower?

My old tower was a LOT smaller, but I thought larger towers offered more ventilation...

Any help would be much appreciated!! My Rig is as follows:

M5A97 Pro MB
AMD Phenom II x6 1100T
2x4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1866Mhz
NVIDIA DeForce GTX 560 Ti
650W High Power Plus PSU

Cheers guys

What CPU cooler do you have? It might need to be removed and remounted after the old thermal paste is cleaned off and new paste applied.
With no PCIe power cables (needing an adapter), your "High Power Plus" sounds like a PSU-shaped object. Under extreme stress, it may be wandering out of spec, causing some of your crashes. I'd suggest replacing it with a good 500W-550W PSU such as anything built by Seasonic (their own, some Antec, all XFX), Delta-built Antec, or a Superflower-built Rosewill Capstone.

I have a cooler master but it's pretty old tbh, so much so that I can't remember for the life of me where I got it from or the model... the thing that's baffling me though is that everything was totally fine before transferring all the hardware to the new tower.

The paste was reapplied a few weeks ago and it seemed to help a little at the time... maybe the paste is too old as well.

Any recommendations for good coolers?

I'm still so confused as to what changed to rocket the temp so high...?

Thanks for the help

From what I can work out it's the cooler master Hyper TX2, but like I said, I can'd find out where I got it from and when (so long ago) so that is purely based on estimated time of purchase and images I've gone through online...
