MSI Z97 I/O shield foam??

My new MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard came with foam on the I/O shield. The foam prevented me from lining up the MB with the stand offs, so I removed it. Is the foam of any importance? Was I wrong to remove it?

Foam there just to protect the motherboard when you press it up against IO shield. Shouldn't make any difference as a lot of motherboard IO shields never have it.
