I am looking to build a new (some may call extreme) rig but one thing has got me a little stuck, my storage options. I would like an SSD to boot and a large amount of storage (3TB+) but to be fast and have a low failure rate (maybe RAID?). I found my choices so easy with the other components but this has had me thinking for days. My budget is quite flexible and any necessary specs can be provided. Help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, Kuala

do you only want the SSD for booting? If so then you only need a 120gb SSD for like $60

if your machine is really extreme... then I would probably put two 240gb SSDs into a raid 0 array. They're about $120 each in US when on sale.

so you end up with a 500gb SSD partition with disgusting transfer rates.

for your actual storage:
buy two 3tb drives and setup in Raid 1 array (data redundancy) - so if one ever fails, all of your data is on the other

you can also backup your SSD system image to these.

"so you end up with a 500gb SSD partition with disgusting transfer rates."

Only in a very few instances. For normal use, a single larger(faster) drive is better.

How would 2xSamsung 840 EVO's (250gb each) (£220 for both) do or is there anything faster? And for main storage a WD Black 3TB (£280). I don't know, it is about £100 out of budget, I'm not sure.
Just to help any Americans, £300 is about $500.
