I have a 4770k processor, I have a evo heatsync as well, 16 gb of crucial ballistix memory, a MSI z87-g45 mobo, and a EVGA gtx 780 overclocked GPU. Is there anything I need to know about overclocking? Even if I don't need it now, what are some things that you do to make sure your OC'ing is safe and not going to ruin any components of your desktop. Long answers are welcome as long as they are relevant.

In the very simplest terms, overclocking that processor you have is done by increasing the CPU's clock multiplier a click at a time until it becomes unstable running a stress test like Prime 95 or Intel Burn Test. Then increase the core voltage a little and get it stable again. Repeat.
All the while watching the core temps to be sure they don't go above safe for your processor (~72C)

1. For Cpu please check if there is any automatic profile in motherboard bios. If manually u r doing it Please increase ur voltage of cpu by +0.2 v each time and not more and see the stability by various benchmarking softwares.
2. For GPU also do not increase ur voltage settings. It will heat up ur card drastically. only increase core clock by +25 and again test with bench software and always keep eye on ur temperature of card. Make sure it is less than 90deg Celsius at max load. You can also underclock to save power during less usage of Video card like watching movies. This will save power and heat generation will reduce.
3. Memory(RAM) : If ur RAM is having profile u can set profile for overclocking RAM in Bios setting. This can increase ur Memory operation.

For any overclocking always remember to never increase any setting frequently without testing. It can burn ur components and always go for good cooler, if u are very enthusiastic use good coolers like water cooler and good airflow inside case.

Please rate up if I helped u
Thank You.

A few questions. 1. How does increasing memory operation help and I do that from BIOS correct? and what do you mean by profile?
2. How do I find the temperature of CPU, do I need a program like the other guy mentioned?

Ans1) U should have Memory profile in ur RAM Like XMP(Extreme Memory Profile) and these can be set from BIOS or Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU)" .
Ans2 )Yes. Any software like : Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU) , Speed Fan, CPUID HWMonitor, Prime 95 and many more. These are free to use.
Please make sure after overclocking temperature should be stable within ~70 Deg C. It should not fluctuate because if it is fluctuating ur system will not stable ie temperature should not increase ~10 deg up instantly within 5 sec. If more than 90 then do not overclock in any circumstances. It will reduce life of CPU.

You can also use "Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU)" to overclock but before that u have to enable Third Party option in ur board BIOS . U can use this utility inside windows, very easy to use. see link below:

Ask me if any more question.
Thanks and Good luck
