Searching the usual suspects (Newegg, Microcenter, Tiger Direct) I only find HGST and Hitachi drives that fit my criteria...should I go for it? I've never used them before. Is there a different place I can look to find something by Western Digital, Samsung or even Seagate?

I think all brands are pretty much equivalent. I installed a 2.5 inch 1TB HGST 5400 rpm drive in my last build because I got it for $60 at Newegg. It is running fine. low temps and quiet. I can't vouch for how long it will last, though. I've never had a hard drive of any brand fail.

Unfortunately, the drive is too big for a laptop.

I definitely notice a difference between 7200 and 5400 as a system drive. If it was my desktop, I wouldn't care too much since it would just be extra storage.
