My little bro built his first computer almost 2 years ago and right now he's having problems where the computer powers off randomly and when gaming (temperatures in the 40 C range so it's normal) and he needs to either unplug the desktop PSU or switch off the power bar multiple times to get his computer to restart. After the computer powers off the power button of his desktop blinks.

He has the following specs:

AMD fx 8150 bulldozer CPU
MSI 970A-G46 Socket AM3+ AMD970+SB950 Chipset
6 GB DDR3 Memory
ASUS HD Radeon AMD 7850 2 GB GPU
2 TB HDD
Thermaltake TR2 500W Cable Management Optimized Power Supply (TR-500)

I searched up old threads and it could either be the motherboard or the PSU, How can we tell the difference between which is the bad component?

Solution
Swap out the old PSU for a good PSU (e.g. the one in your computer) and see if it happens again. If it doesn't, it is the motherboard.

it's going to be the PSU, Thermaltake doesn't make really great PSUs and if it's 2 years old it's pretty much gonna be done. Get a new PSU, from a reliable manufacturer like Seasonic, or if you're on a little more of a budget, Corsair works fine as well.

I really did have a similar problem with a TR2-600W, I bought it dirt cheap when I first built a computer and didn't know better, after about 1.5 years it stopped reliably turning on my computer and caused it to freeze sometimes in addition to being terribly loud.
