I have a Sapphire Radeon 5970, and I'm not getting even close to a solid 60 fps on AA proving grounds. This card is quite a bit older, but I see that according to the GPU hierarchy it's still competing with some of the modern cards. I'm wondering if it's worth my while in getting a 2nd Radeon 5970 to crossfire with my current one. I can get a used 5970 for about $200-250, but a R9 290 would run me about $400. Does anyone have any data on how 5970 crossfire vs. R9 290 setups compare?

Running an i7-3820, ASUS P9X79 LE, solid-state SATA 3 drive, Sapphire Radeon 5970, 27" ASUS LED, 850W Antec supply, etc.

Please only respond if you have valid experience, information. No speculations please. Thanks in advance.

Honestly, it's always better to go with the newer. Not only will you have new features that the old card doesn't have, (mantle, etc.) the card will last longer and it's more logical to get a single-card solution that is as strong as a crossfire solution.

2 x hd5970's would work about as well as a gtx 760 or R9 280X. Not a R9 290.

The R9 290 has the advantage of heaps more vram too.
