Ok so I'm sure you've seen the same song and dance. Well I have done research online and found very few that supported this Mobo so I figured I would ask to make sure.

Setup:
ASUS z87 pro Mobo
Ssd crucial m500 120gb (detected)
HDD seagate barracuda 2tb 6mb/s 7.2K
Both HDD and ssd are on same power cord but separate sata cords/ports. They are in sata port 1(ssd) & 2(HDD) (yellow, not the brown media ports).

The bios recognizes the ssd not the HDD. I switched the sata cables to make sure it was port or cable. And the bios will recognize the ssd in 2 and nothing in 1. The HDD spins btw when the pc is powered on.

Under the sata settings I can't enable it, or pick it up under the advanced settings for sata ports or boot order or sata HDD configure.

I won't be getting windows 8.1 till next week d/to shipment delay. So that means I get to work on my stomach ulcers for a week. I figured it would be the Mobo needing an update or just have to access it in windows once I load it, in other words nothing to worry about. But I wanted to check with y'all to get some support.

So the questions: did I do everything I could for now? Should I just wait until I get windows and can check then? Is this a common problem with newer HDD? Does it sound defective? Or does it sound like I just need to update my motherboard/drivers when I get windows (I could flash it in but heard it could cause problems and this is a newly built 1600$ pc)?

Try the hdd in another pc. If still not recognised then replace it.

Bradley,

Did you ever find a solution to your issue? I have almost the same config (same MB, same HDD, diff SSD) and I have been stuck on this same issue for WEEKS. I cannot get the HDD to be recognized by the ASUS BIOS.

I've tried every permutation of SATA Mode and CSM settings imaginable. I have tried 3 or 4 versions of the BIOS as well, and even tried a second MB (exactly the same).

Somehow I think I am missing something ridiculously simple. If you (or anyone else) has any thoughts I would be terribly grateful!

In all honesty, no I didn't. I used an external USB plug in bay, it didn't work. Called the Mobo manufacturer and the seagate manufacturer. Neither had any claims on it (doesn't mean there isn't a problem tho just means they don't want to admit to one) and did trouble shooting through both companies and still nothing.

So in the end I ended up with sending my HDD back and just getting two ssd 256 gb (~110$ a piece on sale) and haven't looked back. They are ridiculously fast and couldn't imagine having anything slower.

the input I received from other users on other websites mainly pointed towards getting a western digital as it tends to work "better" with windows 8. But never got around to trying it

My SSD is recognized by the BIOS but it isn't stable. What BIOS settings did you use for the SSD(s)? AHCI, I guess? What about things like CSM, Secure Boot, Fast Boot, etc.?

I can get Windows 7 to install on the SSD on 1 in ~10 tries (I get all sorts of 'Error Code 0X0....' on the other tries), and that occassional successful install eventually starts to blue screen. I feel like I've missed/misset some important setting(s).

Oh, and did your BIOS recognize any SATA CD/DVD drives? I can't get any of those to appear either (although my external USB CD/DVD drive certainly appears).

In all I have tried two Z87-Pro motherboards, three different HDD vendors, and 2 different CD/DVD drives. After 40+ days of trying, I am honestly at my wit's end. The 3 desktops I built before this one all worked on the first bootup...

Some of these May be redundant and you probably have heard a couple times. But I had problems with my first ssd. I use AHCI but in all honesty I didn't touch any of the bios settings at first run through except to change the cd/DVD to boot first and the ssd to boot second. Then came back later and switched them back. The only problem I had was a faulty cable with the ssd so switch it out for another sata cable. Otherwise I didn't have many issues with it. The only things I could suggest would be the basics of switch ports, switch cables, try it on another comp to make sure it's not the ssd itself. I do know that a lot of people bypass the z87 pro for the saber tooth or another Mobo entirely. I dunno why but after so many issues with bsod after loading up the os and tryin to use the ASUS software to overclock the cup I understand why now. I'm running smoothly now tho but I'm at a default setting overclock.

At this point I figured you've run through everything. But in the end I ran through 3 HDD that I kept sending back to newegg cause none of them worked with the Mobo. So I think the only viable suggestion is the one I wish I would have taken. Which is to get a better Mobo (which I thought this 200$ Mobo was goin to be the best at its price).

But yeah never had any issues with cd/DVD drive. And when I hooked up my ssd with a good cable in one if the assigned ports it picked it up and worked as soon as I turned it on

Yep, that's what I have concluded. Which means BOTH boards and/or all 3 HDDs are just twitchy, or at east twitchy TOGETHER. Given the # of similar posts I have seen elsewhere, I don't think its just ME, thank goodness.

I am stuck with this one now because 40+ days = no return, sadly. But I will definitely consider it next time.

It definitely feels that way.

Thanks for all the input. I am just about ready to write this one off entirely. ASUS may have just lost itself a fan...
