There is virtually no difference in possibilities between the existing Z87 chipset and the new Z97 chipset. When purely looking at specifications we can conclude that this new generation of boards is the most boring ever. that conclusing is a bit harsh though as manufacturers have used this new chipset to introduce boards with a lot of new features. All the Z97 boards we have tested are all showing improvements on their Z87 predecessors.
