I know that MS officially, finally, stopped supporting Win XP last month (though they did relent becuz of the security breach a week or so ago...

my ? is... are the updates of XP, post sp3 to discontinuation of support, still available from MS... or from elsewhere? will enabling 'automatic updates' in XP sp3 download these on a new install of XP sp3?...

any response is welcome...

I did a re-install on my mother's old computer, starting from on old XP disk. To get to max updates I had to install SP3 from a downloaded file, then run windows update, then restart, then run update, etc.

Hope that helps.

unicorn, your response does help... alot of years ago, i took a notebook computer on a weekend vacation. i hadnt used it in months, and when i connected to the internet, had alot of updates to install for XP (as i recall, around 60). i let windows update install them all, and my system was rendered unbootable. fortunately, i was able to use a restore point to fix it back. i then installed the updates a handful at a time, restarting system each time, and successfully installed all of the updates, but it was a tedious and time-consuming task...

now, i find many more updates i need to install to bring XP sp3 up to date. i am wondering...

definition updates for Win defender... is it sufficient to install only the most recent?
security updates... is it sufficient to install only the most recent?

is there any way to make the manual process easier? when i begin window update, it automatically selects all available updates, and i must manually deselect each one i dont want it to install at this time?

regards... dnormtech

I don't really know, I just followed all steps reccomended by windows update after installing base SP3. It took a long time.
