Does he have a ethernet driver installed? Also can you try a different ethernet cable?

No, He just installed Windows 7 and he's trying to connect via Ethernet so he can dl the drivers for Wi-Fi, I didn't know you needed a driver to use internet via ethernet, If You don't have ethernet drivers how are you suppose to download drivers?

If your trying to install a driver, download the driver onto a usb on another computer and switch it over.

I can easily do this for him but I don't know what drivers I need to get for him, or where to get them?

Find out the make/model of the motherboard. Go to that manufacturer website and download it do a USB stick.

I went to the Gateway website and selected his model and it has it for Windows 7 and Windows 8, his laptop originally had windows 8 but he just installed Windows 7, should I download the drivers for 7 or 8?
