Should I buy another fan or change my cooling system?

I currently use a 212 evo cooler fan for my cpu and I am overclocking my system. It runs fine until I play games at very high settings where it causes my PC to shut down. My question is would it be beneficial to buy another cooling fan and how much of an impact will this have on the temperature of my system, or should I just opt for another cooling method?

The 212 evo cooler is not a cooling solution meant for over clocking. I suggest with the Noctua NH-D14 (80$) for air cooling or the corsair h100i(100$) for liquid cooling. You will notice about a 15 degree difference in some cases.

Before jumping to conclusions, please post all your system specifications. Are you sure the shutdown is because of high CPU temps? The Hyper 212 EVO is capable to deliver good temps at 4.2 to 4.5GHz (if you have a 2500k or 2600k you can get to 4.5 on an Evo.)

If I were you, instead of spending $100 on a cooler like the h100i I would go with a custom water cooling loop. Here's a really good one for around $150. You really can't go wrong with a custom loop and unlike an air cooler or a h100i you can further expand it in the future. If you don't have the money, I'd advise you save up because it really is worth it. Also, make sure you have good air flow in your case with the front fans blowing in and the top fans blowing out. Good luck!

I will be honest, I am new to this and only finished building my PC a couple of days ago so bare with me. My specs are as follows:

Cpu: Intel core i5-4760K 3.4ghz
Mobo: MSI Z87-G43 ATX LGAII50
Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8gb
Graphics card: Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 7950
PSU: Corsair CX 600w
SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 120gb
HDD: Western Digital 1TB 3.5 7200rpm

How about when using two CPU fans? Would this decrease the temperature much or would the improvement not be worth the money spent?

My worries with a water cooling system is that I have read it's cooling capabilities are specific to the cpu unless you expand it, meaning the other components will not have the benefit of another fan within the case. As I have said, I am new to this so feel free to educate me if I'm wrong.

It's probably not your cooler.

I've had an FX 8350 at 4.5GHz on that cooler with 1 PWM fan and it kept it under 60c during stress testing with all 8 cores at 100% load. Something like a Noctua NHD14 or Phanteks TC14PE will give you 3-4c lower temps, but not much more than that.

Hyper 212 EVO does NOT benefit from a second fan. You will only see a 1-2c difference. Waste of money.

As for why it is rebooting, there's not enough info here to make an accurate diagnosis. Include detailed system specs and settings so we can help find out what is causing it. And even then, it may not even be a hardware issue, especially if your voltages and temps are fine. And I've seen some recent game patches, Flash updates, steam patches and driver updates cause crashes in some games.

I disagree, the 212 evo is pretty good bang for the buck for a moderate overclock. If you want a more agressive overclock, I agree the noctua and h100i are the best options currently.

Back to original post.... Please post your BIOS specs, and temperatures. This may not even be a cooling problem, its quite possibly an unstable overclock and you need to adjust it.

To start, if you are overclocking through windows, don't. Need your full system information and BIOS settings if you want help. Otherwise not much we can do here.

Hello, you are correct on that but the only components that need cooling really are the cpu and gpu. For example, the heatsinks on the motherboard keep it cool and same with the ram. The HDD or SSD doesn't need cooling either. Water cooling with a custom loop will drop temps dramatically and will also help with motherboard/RAM temps because the hot air from the cpu and gpu no longer blow onto it. It is a very effective cooling method and I recommend it. Once you start water cooling I can guarantee you'll never go back!

Edit: here's a waterblock that will work with your 7950.

You could either use this on your loop or use a universal waterblock off of eBay for much cheaper.

I use two on my r9 290x's and they work like a charm with some heatsinks over the vrams.
