Hi, I am looking to upgrade my GPU to a nvidia 780 ti or a radeon r9 290. My question is, at my current processor, will it be worth the extra $200 for the 780 ti plus the PSU, or should i just get the 290. If I get the 780 ti, i don't want to have it "bottle necked" to the point where i should just get a 290 or 290x regardless. My prospective game to play at the moment is Watch Dogs, and i want to try to run the game on ultra or high at 60 fps. I'll appreciate any suggestions that you guys can give me. Thanks!

Current GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5850
Current CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor (6 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Current Motherboard: Asus Crosshair IV Formula.

Solution
I've had a Phenom II x6 1090T OCd @ 4.0 GHz drive a pair of HD 7950's to 95-99% in Crysis 3. 40-70 FPS (Avg in the 50's), maxed details with 2x SMAA. But that was pretty much the limit. This had all 6 CPU cores at 90-95% or so. It's still very capable in multi-threaded games, but reaching it's limit as to the GPUs it can push to full potential.

I would definitely upgrade the GPU now. Something like an R9 280 or GTX 770 would be good. But I would wait and see if the 1090T can handle Watchdogs with a good cooler and OC to 4.0GHz or close to it. If not, your motherboard is excellent and should support an FX 8350. (* Check the supported CPU list for your revision)

Whether you keep the 1090T or get an FX 8350, I would pair it with...

NiCoM

I would really find a oppotunity to sell that cpu + mobo so you could afford the R9 290 + i7 4770k or i5 4670K w/mobo.
But the cpu is equal to the cpu performance of a new kavari apu the a10-7850K or a really old i5-2320, which is enough for most games, but i would really upgrade that also, instead of putting all the money in the gpu.

Whether you keep the 1090T or get an FX 8350, I would pair it with an H100i (2x120mm) or H110 (2x140mm and much quieter) to get a good, cool OC. For Air, a Noctua NHD14 or Phanteks TC14PE will still be good, just slightly warmer and probably quieter.

You can easily avoid a huge upgrade cost and teardown/rebuild of your PC this way.
