hi guys, my windows 8 desktop recently crashed and became un-bootable!! i tried everything i could to remedy the problem, factory reset said there were no restore points which i found hard to believe. i made a windows 8 recovery disk but that didnt fix it. i tried various cmd prompts /rebuild bcd, bootrec.exe and some others. nothing worked!! eventually i formatted the drive from cmd prompt and planned to reinstall windows, but geuss what that wont work either!?!?!?!?!?! i get a message saying something along the lines of ''windows cannot find microsoft software license terms''. i cant think of anything at this point need help from the pro's

Make sure when you reformat your drive you reformat it as ntfs filing system also make sure to reformat both partitions windows 8 creates two partitions when installing. One of them is for system files the other one is about 350mb for boot files. When you try reformatting make sure to reformat both. Also if you want you can try merging the 350mb partition that it creates to your main partition then reformat it as one partition, that way you won't lose an extra 350mb.

Tell me how it goes :).

I don't think you can do it in cmd but you can create a bootable usb and boot up on something like linux (my favorite version of linux is kali). Any version of linux would work or if you even have a bootable version of windows xp that would work. Just enter the disk management utility on either linux or something old windows version and after that it should be pretty self explanatory.

If you create a 350mb partition it will just automatically create another one it won't use the one you create. Have you tried installing windows 7 from another device, is there any possibility the disc is damaged?

You mean you are putting the hard drive in your old system and trying to install windows 7 there? That is a good idea. Also a suggestion, you can also leave both this hard drive and your old desktops hard drive in there and boot up from your old desktops hard drive to reformat this one as an ntfs, you can also merge the 350mb partition to the main partition.

I am not sure what the size of the hard drive is but if 350mb is a big deal to you then you should re merge it before installing other os or else you will lose the hidden 350mb unless you were to reformat the drive and start over.
