it powers on initially for a few seconds, then abruptly goes off for a few seconds, then back on but it never boots. ( black screen) with the lock buttons flashing in unison. Power led is lit, and the disc led flashes ever so briefly. that's it. Checked the ram, it's seated and locked. Don't hear the fan running either... ugh, hope it's not the motherboard. I just replaced the drive a few months ago.

Solution
one could be defective or the slot that why you have to try one of them at the time in the first slot then do the same test with the second slot only on both ram .

Hi,
Thanks for helping. I'm not sure I know which light you're referring to. I have 4 led lights on the front lip of the laptop, (hp elitebook 8730w vista64 bit) the battery is shot so I always have it plugged in to ac. These are the only led lights, besides those on the function panel

1. Wireless on/off
2. Power/standby
3. Battery plugged in/charging
4. Hard drive / optical drive activity

3.

Hi there, I carried out the steps you provided but it didn't change anything. You are talking about the power battery right? as that's what I removed, got to thinking though you may have meant the cmos battery? The computer was functioning but somehow one of the memory modules went bad (I think) it said 2 gigs memory when it should have been 4. I removed both ram, thinking maybe one was just a bad connection. plugged both back in and that's when the computer failed to boot. looked the modules once again but they are seated and locked in. perhaps the other module went out. If both went out, would that inhibit the computer to start?

Problem solved! I deduced that the two blinking lock led at the top, blinked 3 times, then stop briefly then again 3 times etc. According to HP's support site, 3 blinks = memory issue. Replaced both modules and that did the trick. Concerning though how both modules went out. Something caused them to go. Thank you for you help, it's comforting to have someone else's ideas and possible solutions.
