My hard disk got converted into a dynamic disk from basic disk accidentally. What is the difference between the two?How can i get it back into a basic disk?Pls help me sir....

Solution

Dynamic disks are a neat little tool which allows several functions typically reserved for RAID controllers to be performed in software. This includes striping, mirroring, and JBOD arrangements. If you converted your disk from basic to dynamic by accident there's no need to switch it back, it will continue to perform normally.

Dynamic disks can span multiple physical disks or be RAID arrays. Here is a brief description of the two:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa363785(v=vs.85).aspx

"Dynamic disks provide features that basic disks do not, such as the ability to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes) and the ability to create fault-tolerant volumes (mirrored and RAID-5 volumes)"

" Dynamic disks offer greater flexibility for volume management because they use a database to track information about dynamic volumes on the disk and about other dynamic disks in the computer. "

"Dynamic disks are a separate form of volume management that allows volumes to have noncontiguous extents on one or more physical disks. "
