Hi guys, I really need help to fix a computer that means way too much to me at this time. It's caused allot of stress lately and after changing power supply twice and after taking my machine to a repair person, it still won't work properly.

Roughly a year this month I built a PC:

Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 mother board
Corsair Vengence 2x4 DDR3 1600 RAM
Seagate 250 GIG HDD (used)
Western Digital 1TB HDD
1GB Zotac GT 430 Zone edition GPU (used)
Samsung DVD drive
5 system fans
Cooler Master elite case
500 Watt Cooler Master Power supply
AMD Phenom II X4 965 (black edition I think with stock cooler)

HPw2207h monitor

All connected to Forza NT-501 UPS 250W

What I can remember is it all started when my foot touched one of the cords used to setup the computer and it immediately shut down. That was roughly over a month ago, now i've been experiencing some weird issues. Currently when I try powering it up, the power light and fans power up for a few seconds then they all shut down.

I have since bought two power supplies, a 600W which worked for one day and a 700W which worked for a few minutes so I now have the 500 Watt Cooler Master power supply installed. Just over a week ago I brought the system to a computer repairs shop and incredibly it powered up and worked, I even played Battlefield just to try it out.

So now I think it might be a power issue related to the Forza UPS so when I got home I connected directly to an outlet and amazingly it worked for a day or two then I decided to plug it back into the UPS and it worked for a few days then it started having problems again. This time it would power up for ten seconds to a minute then power off.

For a few days I tried connecting to the outlet witout using the UPS and it haven't worked since. I once connected it back to the UPS and it worked all day then when I shut it down and tried powering it up during the night it didn't work.

Today I brought it next door and it worked, brought it back home and it worked. I went away for a few hours and when I came home, the problem started again.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The coolermaster power supply won't help. Either will a Forza.

Either will a GT430.

Is this pc worth spending money on?

If it won't run at all then we can't see how its running.

If it's all been hooked up right then you need to start swapping out parts. Maybe run an upgrade path.

Get a better cpu and motherboard. Don't buy anything more than 2 years old.

Get a better graphics card - a GTX of any description would be a good start.

Get a good power supply - http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html#13224310

I wouldn't be surprised if you said you're using DOS5 or Windows 95. Get Windows 7, 8 or 8.1

Get rid of the old 250gb hdd.

Get a 1080p 24inch monitor.

There are too many dodgey parts to your pc. Any of them could breakdown at any moment. Upgrade

Try keeping it off the surge protector...like forever...because your trying to pull all that power through a 250 watt surge protector that wasn't designed to handle more than 250 watts. Its output max is 250 watts.

Also...is your home a new home or an old home? Are the sockets in your home clean, free from dust...dirt or any other foreign materials? Is your computer kept on the floor or on a desk?

Another thing you might consider is it could be a loose connection either to your power supply or in your computer itself.

If you can rule out all those possibilities...then you might want to see if you can find another motherboard (borrow one from someone) and test your components out on that motherboard and see if its the motherboard that is the problem. (Like how many motherboards I can put in one motherboard sentence? :D )

Why run the upgrade path until you have exhausted every last available option on diagnosing the issue? ((If he is using DOS5 or Windows 95 then obvious an upgrade is in order...can't hold onto the past forever because it doesn't want to hold onto you :D ))

Let me just add that I am from Jamaica and most pc parts here are way too expensive, so with that said, only if necessary will I replace a component.

I am running windows 8, hope that's not a surprise.

I think the power in my home could be a problem. I am living close to the sea so corrosion could be a possible issue. Is their any way of testing if the system is getting sufficient power from outlet without having to purchase additional equipment?

If this is a power issue wouldn't it also affect other equipments in my house?

my computer is kept on the desk holder which is very close to the floor.

It would affect other electronic equipment. Remember if you work on a pc, then wear an anti-static bracelet. It doesn't take much to upset a pc.

Is there a pc shop that might help you with secondhand bits?

You gotta admit - with that build list, even DOS wouldn't be a surprise. But W8 is great.

Odds on the power supply is still at the heart of your problems. Next bet is the motherboard. Then the graphics card.

Hi guys, just wanted to update you all on the current status of this machine.
I went ahead and got rid of a few parts and it seems the machine is running stable atleast for two days now.

Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 mother board

Corsair Vengence 2x4 DDR3 1600 RAM

Seagate 250 GIG HDD (used)---------------Got rid of this

Western Digital 1TB HDD

1GB Zotac GT 430 Zone edition GPU (used)------Got rid of this
I bought a cheap 1GB GPU just to get the system running

Samsung DVD drive

5 system fans---------------Only two system fans are now connected (I plan on reconnecting all)

Cooler Master elite case

500 Watt Cooler Master Power supply

AMD Phenom II X4 965 (black edition I think with stock cooler)

Also I took out the metal shield that comes with the motherboard, the same one that connects to the case around the back where usb ports are. I did this because I noticed the system turned off when I connect usb devices to the back of the case. It seems some electric shortage was taking place. It now works with the metal thing removed.
