I recently upgraded from a i5-2390t to an i5-2500k on MSI P67-GD53 lga1155 after install, computer will not boot with DIMM 1 & 2 occupied, tried switching out ram, no sticks appear broken/bad and I am certain I did not put any stress on the ports to break a solder. almost not worth the cpu upgrade to be running at only 8gb ram. G. Skill sniper RAM. Currently running system with DIMM 3 & 4 only

Solution

It is extremely unlikely that a PSU issue would cause DIMMs to fail in slots 1/2 but work in slots 3/4. DIMMs only use ~2W each so it is also very unlikely that 2-DIMM/4-DIMM configurations would make much of a difference as far as the PSU is concerned.

Additionally, I'm almost certain the 270X uses less power than your old 5850.

Also, your system configuration likely peaks under 300W so unless your 700W PSU is a piece of garbage that does not deserve a rating much above 400W, it should be vastly sufficient.
can be two issues. one is a bios issue with the newer cpu. make sure the mb has the newest bios file. the other issue is there bent pin in the ram slot or the new cpu not seating on all of the mb pins. if that not the failure then the cpu itself has a bad memory controller. intel newer cpu have the ram controller built into the cpu.

Any of the 4 sticks will work, but only on DIMM 3 &4, installing all 4 sticks causes it to bootloop. I dont think I damaged anything, this is like my 8th build, im not a noob. But anything is possible. Should I just be trying on DIMM 1 &3 or is it 2&4?

Cleared cmos, updated bios last night, still no prize.
I also went from a 5850 HD to XFX r9 270x the week before. also running four 7200rpm sata drives and the new cpu,
Is my 700watt psu the problem?
