So I built a PC and it has been falling apart since i plugged it in 6 weeks ago. Right now I'm recovering from a position where the system would not boot due with a screen saying "Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer." After unplugging everything internally and externally including all drives and plugging it all back in it started working again.

except the two USB ports on the front are not reading my flash drives saying such things as naming then as Removable Disk E, then asking me to put a DVD in it. the front audio is fine but not the USB's. It even remains there when there's nothing plugged in, It's the ghost of the optical drive they sold me that went through a loud and grinding mechanical failure during the first installation of Windows, I had to retrieve the DVD with a screwdriver. That was it done, life expectancy of half a DVD.

So I guess these front ports that came with the case and plug into the motherboard are not good, I should disconnect them but I kind of like having them there so I don't have to crawl round the back of the machine and that'll be one PCI slot, the optical drive and the front ports gone before I even start a project.

If they were coursing a fault so bad the thing could not start up they are a liability.

Front ports are USB3, any ideas if this is fixable or could be a software problem ?
