I have a Hyper 212 EVO so heat isn't a problem. But would I be able to over clock it to 4ghz? So I can get 8350 performance

More about : 8320 overclock asrock 970 extreme

Actually you would have to get past 4ghz and then u the 8320 would be a close match for the 8350.

But what about the board being 4-1 power phase and everyone saying you can't overclock on it and the board sucks...

Then you should not overclock..it's strongly not recommended. It would decrease the life of both the processor and the mobo. Still u can increase it by some 200mhz if u have good cooling. But not recommended.

4 + 1 power phase is not meant for OCing 8-cores. As sourodip said, a little OC might work if you have good cooling, but monitor your temps (especially for the motherboard) carefully if you decide to do so.

The FX 8320 and 8350 are the same chip with different clocks; At 4GHz they're equal.

The solution was unselected since it was not selected by the OP.

Couldn't I get to 4ghz and be fine? That's a really small OC from 3.5 to 4

You can try it, but be very careful and make sure the motherboard is not overheating if you do so.

Well the motherboard has heat sinks on the VRM's so that's a plus. When I say OC, everyone thinks I want to OC a lot. I just want a .5ghz increase which isn't asking for to much because I can just leave the voltages alone. When you get to 4.2+ then you change voltages.

True, VRM heatsinks are a plus. Every chip is different, but 4GHz shouldn't require changing voltages so it should work fine.

What's another good board that I can OC the 8320 with and is under 80. Or is this fine to OC to 4ghz with? I'm only wanting 4ghz out of the 8320 I don't plan to go higher unless I get another mobo down the road.

I think you'll be fine at 4ghz just keep a close eye on your temps. Take the fan off the stock heatsink and strap it to the vrm heatsink and you'll have no worries.

What do you mean by instability/heat issues? I know heat like if it gets to let's say 70+ degrees. But the instability I don't know.

Instability means your PC getting a BSOD due to too hot VRMs or insufficient CPU voltages. This can be tested by running Prime95 for a few hours.

What's a BSOD?

Never mind. What is your input? Do you think a overclock to 4ghz will be fine on the board with a 8320?

I'm kind of conflicted on this... On the other hand OCing the CPU to those clocks shouldn't require changing the voltage, in which case it should be fine. On the other hand, every chip is different; Your CPU might not get to those speeds without additional voltage, making this a not-so-good idea.

Do you already have the motherboard? If you have it, just see what happens. If it works without any problems, no need for a better board. Just be careful with the overclock and temps and you won't put your hardware to risk.

If you don't have the motherboard yet, get the one I linked earlier; It's the best 970 board out there.

Good board would be the Asrock Extreme 4.

So, do u need me to do a build? If yes, then pls specify ur budget and the parts to be excluded.

so you haven't ordered any of the parts yet is what your saying?

edit: if you haven't ordered any parts yet, then this is a pointless discussion about that board. Never cheap out on a motherboard.

It would be a good one, but it too has only a 4+1 VRM design. The Gigabyte I linked has a 8+2 design, making it the best 970 board for OCing of any kind.

Since you don't have the part yet, I recommend going with the Gigabyte I linked: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-ga970...

You won't have any problems getting to 4GHz with it.

I have to agree with Eduello, if you have to get a cheap board then definitely go with the gigabyte board he recommends.

Never mind, i think that upgrading from a Asrock 970 ex 3 to another 970 board isn't an upgrade. I'd say go for the 990fx board.

I already have my set part list. Also the CPU and the motherboard will only cost me 195 because of a combo deal at microcenter

Well if you already have those parts, just get the Gigabyte + FX-8320 combo and you're good to go.

Like the asrock 970 extreme 3 r2.0 and the gigabyte board are both 90 at micro center. The original combo deal was fx 8320 and asrock, but I guess if you match it with the same price board, it's the same combo deal. So that's a plus :)

I know its an old thread but... for those looking for info...
The 970 extreme 3 R2 not suited for overclocking? = Bullshit.
Mboard: ASrock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
Ram: DDR3 1333Mhz CL9
Vid: Radeon HD7870 GB edition.

Have ran this board with an AMD Phenom X2 unlocked to quadcore and overclocked to 3.8Ghz. So that was an excellent overclock, no complaints there, great performance.

Now I am testing the FX 8320, I wait buying such a product about a year or so because they get better in the production of these chips after a while. I have started tuning it a few days ago and I am finding its sweetspot and the right settings.

For cooling I use the Cooler Master TX3 EVO wich is very cheap as wel. The stock cooler definitely does not do the job, even on stock speed.

Temps stay below 59 degrees with prime 95 with the TX3 EVO. But warning first I had a crash becausethe auto fan speed was adjusted to slow and it ran to hot so I put the fan speed on full first to run the test.

Have mine running at 4,4Ghz, stock voltage. NB is running at 2200 and HT is at 2400MHz.
Now probably the hardcore overclockers think this is shit.. but for a small budget this is an excellent gamer board. I am lucky with my CPU because 4.4GHz at stock voltage is very nice, 900Mhz overclock no less and I am not done tuning yet. My bro has the ASUS sabertooth 990FX R2, but does not get better overclocks dispite the huge V8 cooler. But his chip is one year older then mine.

This is certainly no big overclock but looking at value for money: excellent!

important settings:
Spread spectrum: OFF
APM: OFF
Turbo mode: OFF
CPU Voltage: Stock 1.35V
NB speed: 2200Mhz
NB voltage: 1.2
HT speed: 2400Mhz
LLC:o FF

Cool and Quiet: ON
C1E: ON
CPU C6: OFF

Have been running prime for 1 hour and everything OK.
