Download and run CPU-Z. That will give you a precise readout of what CPU you're using.

That means you can use a Phenom X3 or less. The X4 uses 125 watts.

From HP's website these are the CPU's that will work in your motherboard.

AMD Phenom II Quad-Core
AMD Phenom II Triple-Core
AMD Phenom Quad-Core (A) 9xxx series (AM2+)
AMD Phenom Triple-Core (T) 8xxx series (AM2+)
AMD Athlon X4
AMD Athlon X3
AMD Athlon X2 (B) (AM2+)

The board may support it, but will his factory PSU?

If his original is 95 Watts then his motherboard should accept a quad core Phenom II's as long as it is the same 95 Watt TDP. It won't accept a CPU with a 125 Watt TDP.

Phenom II X3 715

The fastest 95W and AM2+ Phenom I could find. A couple of site have them used for around $100.

EDIT:

For the record, I have a backup tower that has that exact same chipset and I had my Phenom II X6 1090t AM3 in there for a few weeks while I was upgrading. It worked fine. I wouldn't recommend this, but just a heads up.
