I am between those two cards but I just don't know what to do . Reviewers say that r9 290 runs hot but it's powerful as a gtx 780 and r9 280x is just a fine card .I can buy an 290 for 300 euro and a 280x for 250 .What to do I am in a real hassle here. Thanks for your time.

do not buy a reference card from amd, the whole r7 and r9 series reference is really bad.
why not save up a bit and get 780gtx windforce, amd is hard to recommend these days.

The 290 is a beast. It will be my next card when I decide to upgrade. Even if you down clock it to run cooler, it will still own the 280X. You also get the perk of AMD's new audio processing. Later down the road, you could add an aftermarket cooling solution if it is really warranted. The 290X seems to be the super hot card, the 290 "no X" it isn't as bad of an issue.
