Hi everyone this is my first time replacing the stock heatsink on my i5-3750k I was just wondering once I go to install my new heatsink I ordered will I need to add more thermal compound, is it completely necessary if so how do I go about doing it?

-thank you

Solution
yers you have to replace the thermal paste. some new heatsinks come with it preapplied, some come with a tube of it, depending on the heatsink. there is a million youtube videos showing how to apply the proper amount if you have to apply it yourself.

also, most aftermarket heatsinks use a different backplate for the motherboard so you have to take everything apart and put the new backplate on.

Assuming it has a similar mechanism to the EVO (I believe they are basically the same but I got the EVO model) then it will depend on your case. I think that many cases these days have a motherboard cutout on the back of the case that allows you to put in the bracket that will actually hold the cooler up in place. It might be a bit trickier to do it with the board already in the case, but I think it should be doable. I would take out any pci cards however, in case you drop the cooler
