Please help! This is so frustrating!

I bought Samsung 40f6400 tv. I noticed after a few weeks that my screen would flicker sometimes (mostly in the evenings) when i would turn on my kitchen light. This guy came over, looked at electricity, everything was fine. Then, after a week, same problem all over again. Since I'm working in IT I got an UPS unit at work, this one: CyberPower 600EI-B-GP. I hooked my PC and TV on it to preserve them from damage. They both use like 170W. So, I thought everything is settled. I was very confident about it.

Today, I turn on my kitchen light and the TV flickers. I repeat it 3 times, it flickers 3 times. I don't understand it. Shouldn't the UPS take care of that? Anyone had a similar problem? I'm at wits end. Feeling like I've been cursed here. What should I do?

Is it a fluorescent light? Or any other type of residential lighting that uses a ballast? What kind of lamp is in the fixture?

Yes, actually it is a fluorescent light! Lamp is Tungsram f 33 cool white. I have another lamp connected to the same extension cord where that fluorescent light is plugged in, an ordinary desk lamp.

Any type of ballast like the ones they use emit a wide range of electromagnetic interference, especially older ones that are poorly shielded or have poor noise reduction. This EMF 'noise' can transmit both through the air and through the electrical wiring. As the ballast begins to die (ages), the noise gets worse.

Wow. What would be the best thing to do? To replace the bulb? Or stop using the light all together?

If it doesn't involve too much work/expense, replace the fluorescent fixture with a conventional incandescent fixture. Sometimes when the fluorescent lamp itself starts getting dark areas, the EMF will be worse. Replacing the lamp MAY help, but no guarantees.

If you want to test the EMF theory, remove the kitchen light fixture and temporarily hang a simple socket/lamp there. See if the issue is gone.

Thanks for the quick and precise response! I'll try both and let you know how it goes! Interesting thing to test. But till then I'll definitely stop using it. I'm too worried about my TV.

Does it flicker during the whole time the light is on, or just when the lamp tries to start?

The TV flickers when the lamp is turned on and off. The interesting thing is that it's not always. I've started it during the day also but nothing happened. It's usually in the evening, as weird as it sounds. If it's from 7-10pm it's 99% percent the TV will flickers. it's the weirdest thing.

If it only happens when the light is first turned on, it is most assuredly EMF interference from the florescent lamp. Aggravating, but it will cause no damage to the TV. It is simply corrupting the video signal the TV is receiving with EMF noise. Good luck with your project.
