I'm looking to replace my laptop this fall. I'm currently a grad student that has to do scientific computing and ever since switching to Linux from Windows, I've been refusing to go back to Windows although it is more supported. I'm looking for a laptop that can handle parallel programming once I get to it in my research and is a Unix based system since most solvers seem to be tailored for Unix-based systems. I've had horrible luck with Windows my entire life and have had to completely restore the system at least once on every Windows machine I have ever had. They slow down like crazy after a bit more than a year every single time for me and I absolutely despise Windows 8 (Damn tiles. Do the developers just not trust people to be close to the inner workings of the system?). I play some games but could easily install Windows from what I hear. To sum it all up:

- Need Unix-based system for scientific computing
- Need GPU for parallel programming
- Hate Windows 8 (but could go for 7)
- Need good graphics capabilities for presenting research
- Like Linux, but is not as supported as Windows or Mac
- Play some games but can't consider myself hardcore

Do these reasons seem justifiable or does it seem like I just really don't like Windows?

As i see it, there are a lot of good reasons to get a macbook. But most of those reasons could be a lot cheaper on a non apple product (dell, toshiba, hp, etc)

I'd suggest getting a Windows laptop used (or refurbished) that comes with Windows 7, or downgrading to 7 with a new Lenovo laptop (if that's even possible) and dual booting it with your favourite flavour of Linux.
