Need help, what system would run a minecraft server? $1000 budget

Hello all, and thanks in advance.

My little nephew loves minecraft and wants to be able to run it on his own server. I'm assuming a fairly week card could run it on a 1920x1080 monitor, and it's more cpu dependant?

What would you recommend for a $1000 budget (including OS)

Also, he says he needs it to be windows because he can't host while using mac. Is this true?

Servers have next to zero hardware requirements. You can run a server for pretty much any game on an old pentium 4 and 2 GB of RAM and it will work fine. You don't technically need a GPU at all, since the server doesn't process any graphics. The reason "professional" servers use such extreme components is that they're running dozens of separate game servers at once.

The big reason most people don't run their own servers is that it requires a very good internet connection. You need fast upload and download speeds, and most ISPs give reasonable download speed but terrible upload speed.

Servers do, however, have to be running Windows or Linux. Next to nothing supports a dedicated server on Mac.

Running a server requires ram. The more ram you add, the less SERVER lag you get. I added 16 gigs so you can allocate about 8-12 gigs of ram to your server.

I added a 970 for MC, you can reduce the cost by going to a 960, but really you need a strong GPU when you add a mod like shaders.

If he needs help with the mac/windows server, send me a PM. I used develop plugins for MC servers,

I forgot that MC Servers favor single core performance and speed. The i7 is a good match.
