Amd FX 8120 changes between 3415mhz and 1406mhz

Why does this keep happening? recently I've been noticing that my processor hasn't been as fast, and I went into core temp and every now and then it changes between the two speeds. Why does this happen and can it be fixed? Also is 75c a normal temp?

It's normal for CPUs to change clock speeds depending on load; at lower load they downclock to save power and when they need to they run up to full speed. The newer CPUs also have a "boost" feature to temporarily run at higher than the base speed when demand is very high.

What was going on in the background when these observations were made?

75c is way way! to high for idle temp. If you have 75c idle you definitely need to change your heatsink but even with the stock heatsink I hardly doubt idles would be 75c. There is a possibility that your cpu is defective.

Was that 75C recorded at full load or at idle? If at full load it's safe, though not ideal. If at idle there's a major problem!

75c full load is definitely acceptable but at idle it is insane.

I guess its on full load.Even with stock you cant get 75c on ilde if cpu is not defective

There is always a possibility the cpu is defective. At this point we just need to wait and see what he says, whether it was load or idle.

Im on standard fan speed on the stock heatsink, running only chrome skype and steam in the background. On planetside 2 I've started to lag more frequently. Also I have my side off, as my side fans are broken atm so dust might be able to get in.

I don't know about thermal paste, because I bought half of my current pc pre-built. How do you check?

You have to disconnect the heatsink so you can look at the top of the CPU.

The person who built your pc should have put thermal paste but with those temps it is possible they forgot. To check open up your case and take the heatsink off the cpu carefully. The heatsink will have some locking mechanism whether it is a retention arm or screws. Once you figure out how to take the heatsink off you should see either gray stuff maybe white. If you don't then there is no thermal paste. Before you do this buy some new thermal paste so you can re apply before putting your heatsink back on.

If you are in the US you can get thermal paste at a place like Best Buy or Microcenter. If there are no computer stores near you, you can get it online from Newegg or Tiger Direct.

You do know if some one "forgot" to apply thermal inductive material the cpu would overheat and shut itself down almost immediately don't you? There is no "maybe" if there is no TIM between the heatsink and cpu.

Okay, I need to have a look, I currently have the side of my case (and 2 fans) off, and the inside of my pc is exposed could that be an issue?

Usually it's better to have the sides on and the fan's going to keep up static pressure and keep air flowing.
