I have a pair of turtle beach x12s. Me and my friend are starting to record gameplay and use our headsets for commentary. I am running windows 8 and my laptop only has one jack and it is for both headphones and mic (i checked). I tried a headset buddy and the audio is great but my mic is not recognized. I then tried just plugging the mic jack in and the mic is still not recognized. I tried using them on my friends laptop (he runs windows 7 w/ two jacks) and they work like a dream. HELP?!

The manual for your notebook does not make any mention of even how one changes from headphones to speakers, but it does seem to indicate that it is one or the other.

Can you please check C : \ Program Files \ Realtek \ Audio \ HDA \ for a program called RAVCpl64.exe. If that program works if should place a small orange speaker in the task bar near the clock. This should allow you to remap the headphone port to a mic port.

It would look something like this, but may be customized for your notebook. Very few seem allow so many options now. If I get the latest drivers I only get mic or speaker/headphones.

As for usb sound card, they have many of them. Chances are you will want something that is...
[strike]Many systems running a single jack for headset/mic use TRRS.

Now TRRS has one extra ring than a normal jack and may require an adapter. This extra ring is what is used for a mic.

Please confirm with the system maker before getting an adapter, if it is a TRRS setup the adapters are easy to find because every cellular phone in the world uses them.

If you have a cell headset you can try it on the laptop to see if it works as well since most are trrs.

This is a generic Google link. but gives you an idea of the adapters, they are passive and can be made yourself with just a few parts if needed.

Edit, scratch that, it looks like you HAVE the TRRS adapter.

I thought you tried a buddy's header :)

Please confirm with your notebook maker that the unit does in fact use a TRRS jack, if not you may want to look at a usb soundcard with headset/mic jacks on it.

Any chance to see the Sound -> Recording section to see what it shows when just the mic is attached?

Best bet would be to contact the system maker.

What is the make and model of the notebook anyway?

If it is just a TRS jack it will never do both things at once and you have to TELL it when you connect the mic many times(realtek cards change this in software from headphones to mic.).

If this is the case and you can only use one at a time, you may have to look into a usb card for sure.

I have a Asus X550CA. The thing is though is even when I only plug in the Mic it won't register.... I wouldn't care if I could only use the mic I just can't get it to work... what kind of USB soundcard would I have to get?

As for usb sound card, they have many of them. Chances are you will want something that is small and just stereo + mic because it is for a notebook. You can get units as fancy as you like ranging from 20$-200+.

Just watch out for reviews because some of the cheaper cards may not be quite as good.

Clearly you want Windows 8 support, but most USB sound cards do not even need drivers to at least work.
