Dimension 9100 upgrade for Amahi? Or trash it?

Hi everybody,

I am looking to create a home server onto which I can save all my movies/pictures from iPhones, iPads, and computers in my household. I'd also like to add Plex to it for streaming local movies to my Roku.

I'm considering adding 2 more HDDs to my old dell Dimension 9100 (has a Pentium D, 2.8 GHz) and installing Amahi to create a NAS and media server. I'd love to hear folks' thoughts on the merit of upgrading this machine vs buying a NAS device, or another computer setup to handle these tasks

Questions:

1) Is the Stock PSU in the 9100 (it's 375 watts) capable of powering an additional two WD 2TB Red internal drives? If not what's a good replacement?

2) Is it worth adding more RAM? It currently has 1Gb, but can handle up to 4 Gb.

3) Would the cost of these upgrades be better spent on a whole new machine? If so, what would you recommend?

4) Any other words of wisdom about what I want to accomplish?

Thanks much!
DW

Sure, go ahead and put them in the machine. The PSU will handle it. A hdd consumes a maximum of 10W. And since you're not going to use the server for anything other than storing stuff, you're not in any greater need to upgrade the RAM either. Personally, I would upgrade the RAM and use the server for other stuff as well. RAM is cheap.

Thanks much Anderson. I'll give it a try. You saved me some $$ as I had contemplated replacing the PSU. Appreciate the wisdom. I think I'll follow your advice on RAM too.

Thanks!
