Hi , I recently bought new pieces for a PC I'd Intended to make myself . I changed many pieces in my old pc so it wasn't my first time.... , now yesterday I finally build this PC from all the best components I had and well .... The first time I started it up , some steam came out and a fire smell ... I checked in and there was nothing so I thought it was burning dust. Checked back today and I saw that one of my sata power cord was burn (one at the end of the cord ). All this to say : I can't get to install windows on my pc because it keeps on freezing (randomly , I was once able to finish the installation but it froze on a black screen ). Could this be related ? Also , the sata connector wich was damaged was the one connected to my new hard drive . My computer has a 700 W power supply , gtx 660 graphic card , intel i5 3,4 ghz , a 1000 go hard drive and my motherboard is Asrock IIB75C-10 . One thing I find weird is that I used this power supply and graphic card on my old pc, then of course it didn't "burn" . Oh also , my ram is one stick of 8 go memory (Asata) , and the next time I opened my pc it worked fine ( except for the freeze ) and there was no smell or steam . Anyway thanks for reading me guys !!

Smoke > Smells burnt = Definitely related to the PC randomly freezes. Now the question is why does the PC freeze? Because it's the harddrive that is damaged by the 'fire'. If you connect another harddisk, your PC will function properly. Now, i cannot really understand what happened, or how it happened. You should try to use another harddisk, remember to turn off everything. Shut down the PC, turn off the power from the wall, remove the power cable from your PC, and definitely use another sata cable. You should return your new harddisk, because it's damaged.

Hi, thanks for your answer , I will plug my old hard drive in and see what happens . They dont accept returns at the place I bought my hard drive :/ . Im not sure but I think I know why It burned , on my hard drive there was 3 slots for power cables, the little one that goes to the motherboard , a "L shape " one for the power and another one that has 4 pin at the top and 3 pin a the bottom . I connected all three , I don't know If I should have done this , anyway I'll write what my change of harddrive does here.

I changed my new hdd for another brand new one and sadly it did the exact same thing :/ , So I decided to do a check up on my pc at the nearest store . I will post what they find here for anyone with similar issues !
