Yes you can!
But:
- Make sure your windows system is 64 bit (as it is pretty recent, I gather it will be), otherwise upgrading will give you 0.
- Make sure the RAM you buy is compatible
- I suggest (especially as your graphics card is integrated in the CPU and uses that memory) you buy your memory so that it can work in dual channel mode (ie same size, so either 2*2GB, not much of an upgrade, or 2*4GB...)
- You sure you need that upgrade? did you check your ram was too low?

I suggest either you buy another 2GB stick with the same kind of RAM (including speed)
or you buy a set of 2*4GB of PC-12800 RAM as described here:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/328443-30-dell-inspiron-n5040-ddr3-upgrade

Your notebook supports dual channel ram so I would hardly recommend you to try and have the same RAM in both of your slots.

My opinion being that if you can find it and it is cheaper, the 2GB upgrade might be enough (your PC is not that recent as it would require 8GB of RAM, but that depends on applications you run on it....)
