So basically I had a very bad virus/infection on my computer that wouldn't let me see my screen and when I logged in I just got a black screen and mouse cursor. I took it in to TigerDirect and they said they have to reinstall my operating system which would basically erase everything (I play games so I didn't care that much) but it did cost me $100. So what is this type of infection called? And how can it MAINLY be avoided again? The only thing I download on a day to day basis is World of Warcraft Addons on CurseClient.com not the actual client. But I did go on some free TV websites that I never used but work.

with the internet now..most virus are looking for people with ie. a lot of the virus and ie will drop an infection without the user asking for the file or virus to be downloaded. that why a lot of people (gamers use google and firefox) for the build it ad blocking. the only other thing you can do is keep your anti virus updated and read the reviews on the better ones out there. (mse has failed to pass 3 party testing for awhile now). also when you download a file before you run or open it scan it. also make hirem boot disk or usb stick and a lot of anti virus now have virus rescue disk on there web page. make then and if your rig is infected again most time you can clean it yourself.

free TV might be the origin. If your computer has a new system, it might still connect to internet via the old IP address, which might be enough to catch another virus (those websites that send you trojans and viruses keep your IP-address...). So 1st thing I would do is put a (if possible hardware) firewall between the computer and internet, at least as long as you do not have a good firewall and an up-to-date antivirus program on your computer itself (most routers have built-in firewalls).

I had he experience with my laptop before. Got a total crash that even caused me to physcally loose my hdd. When I would go on the internet, I would immediately get a virus as my windows was not up-to-date with no decent protection...
