I want to connect to internet in my dorm room. They use laptop/device MAC address to provide connection to users. Since this is end of semester I dont want to take a new connection now. My roommate wont share his connection with me but my friend next door has agreed to share with me and he gave me his MAC address and showed me how to change my laptop's MAC address by using a software called 'Technitium MAC address changer v6', but even though I changed my MAC address I still cannot connect to internet. Windows diagnostics says there is no ethernet cable connected but its not true.

My friend uses this method to connect multiple devices in his room but I cannot do it in my room. What is causing this problem? Even he couldn't find out the cause of the problem.

Additional info : DHCP is enabled, drivers are up-to date and working, OS : Windows 8.1 -fully updated, Laptop : Lenovo Z585 Notebook, Network card : Realtek PCIe FE Family controller - driver version : 8.1.510.2013. Please feel free to ask for additional info since I dont have my own router I dont know what more information I need to give here.

Hi

Is this wireless or network cable connection to network and internet?
Only one copy of mac number can be in use at one time

So if other person is on line using this number you can not be
I don't think we are allowed to help you hack or freeload a internet connection

It is a wired ethernet cable connection. My friend turned off his internet and all other devices while helping me out and still didn't work. I'm not taking advantage of my friend either. The university's policy of paying 6 month full price for internet just for one month is pretty ridiculous. I will take a new connection next semester.

Hi
Check your wired Ethernet connection is still working someware else

As if diagnostics says no Ethernet cable connection you will not get anyware until problem is fixed
Are you using a known good rj45 cat 5e or cat 6 cable ?
(Cross over cable may sometimes work if network switch supports this but a standard known good network cable should be tried)

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the quick response. There is no problem with the cable or my laptop because I checked it in the study room and both are working perfectly. Its just that I cannot seem to connect to internet.

I have noticed one important thing though. After I change my MAC address using TMAC v6 software, it seems to be sending small data every couple of seconds. I think its communicating with the DHCP server and its rejecting my connection due to some reason.

Also, after I change my MAC address, the RJ-45 ethernet port shows no lights and Windows shows a RED cross at the internet connection indicating no internet connectivity and also running the troubleshooter says that the cable is not connected which is not true. Cable and network card is perfectly fine and working as i have already checked it.

If you take your laptop and connect it in your friends room does it work. It is not uncommon for a organization that is selling services to use tools to lock mac addresses and such to ports. The really smart ones use 802.1x which makes it rather hard to share accounts.

You can load something like wireshark and see exactly what you PC is sending and receiving including the mac addresses. You should be able to tell if something is actively rejecting you.

Most wired nic card you do not need to use software to change most have a option under the advanced tab for the driver that lets you change it. It is wireless ones that are a pain to change...even the registry edit does not do the trick all the time.

Wow. I checked in my friends's room and it worked. So, I guess its limited to one port.

I downloaded Wireshark but it looks a bit complicated for me. So, for different ports the DHCP server will check the corresponding MAC address of the client (thats me in this case) and issue a certain IP address. Am I correct?

If this is the case, I dont know what to do. I really dont want to pay for a 6 month internet package at the end of the semester. Not that I have any money left anyway :p

They have to be using more than just DHCP since that is pretty stupid and just gives out the IP based on mac. It has no concept of ports. They may be using something like DHCP snooping or they may be using some other form of port security there are a couple. likely you are going to have to find one of the many free hotspots and suffer with than until you can get your own connection.
