I have an old Dell Dimension 3000 XP SP 3 running well, but I want to try Linux. Before I start that process, I want to make sure I'll have a wireless USB adapter ready. The machine will be one floor below a Netgear router. Any recommendations on which adapter to buy? I'd like it to be compatible with Linux and the old XP if possible.

From personal experience, stay away from anything using a Broadcom chipset. They are a headache to get working in Linux.

As far as what is a good USB Wireless adapter, I don't use enough of them to even suggest one. Just be sure to do your research before you buy one. Google searches should be able to turn up what chipset is used by an adapter. I've had good luck with Ralink and Atheros-based adapters.
