Hi!

I am going to build an ultra-cheap Linux box for myself. What do you think of this setup?

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Pentium G3220 3.0GHz Dual-Core Processor ($56.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock H81M-ITX Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Patriot Signature 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($19.99 @ Newegg)
Case: DIYPC HTPC-MiniCube-S Mini ITX Tower Case ($47.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $184.95
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-05-26 12:54 EDT-0400)

I am going to be using an old 250W PSU laying around, along with a 500GB HDD from my old computer.

Would my money be better spent on something else like a Kabini build?

Thank you!

PSU is "Bestec" I believe. Will that suffice?

Thank you in advance!

What is the purpose? I don't like it. I would be tempted to go with fm2/fm2+ and an a4 or a6.

I'm an Intel guy, if you haven't noticed from our forum work together, haha.

Would an AMD APU be better though? I just want a cheap cool little Linux box to load distros on and just play with alongside my big AMD A10-5800K Windows 8 box. No real gaming, just some crappy linux games and using Ubuntu really.

Thanks!

Eh yeah I guess a Pentium will work for that. I just don't trust it's igpu for anything more than flash games. I don't even thrust it for smooth 1080p playback/streaming. For that reason alone I think I would either spring for an i3 or just go with an AMD a series. I'm an Intel guy too, but I also have an A10 6800k HTPC that I'm really happy with. The fm2/fm2+ motherboards have great features for the price. A Kaveri A4-7300 or A6-7400k would be great.

Power Supply should be haswell certified. I did not see one listed. Some are haswell ready and Some are Haswell certified. This is mostly for the low power C-state when the PC goes into sleep or hibernation. I don't really know if that is a windows Exclusive or not. But Even so There are issues when restarting too on a Non Haswell ready/certified PSU

I am just using an old crapper "Bestec" PSU. Would it really be an issue if I use that?

I have an old Radeon HD 5450 laying around, would that be better or worse than the iGPU in the Pentium? How does it compare to the one in say, the A6-6400K?

I honestly prefer Intel mostly because of my forum work on Tomshardware. I started just over a month ago, with my brand new AMD machine, and then started helping people, in the process doing research and discovering how far superior Intel is (Less power, better upgradeability, better performance, less heat problems, better longevity, etc.).

After learning so much, I think I just want to go with the more superior option. AMD's FM2 mini-itx motherboard options are very pricey too.

Anyway, thank you again!

The A6-6400k's iGPU is better than the HD5450 but not by a huge margin I would think.

I would personally go with the A6-6400k, just better overall performance at the price point.

I'd really love to build a Mini-Itx build, and AMD's cheapest FM2 ITX motherboards are like $90!

G3220 ($56) + AsRock H81 Mini ITX ($59) = $116
A6-6400K ($65) + AsRock A78 Mini ITX ($88) + Faster RAM for the APU (+$20?)= $175?

What could have been a good deal, gone... I could almost upgrade to an older i3 or something with that cash.

I'm thinking of just using all my old hardware now:

Pentium E2200 laying around - $0
Mini ITX LGA 775 Board - $45 eBay
Old DDR2 RAM laying around- $0
DIYPC HTPC-MiniCube-S Mini ITX Tower Case - $48

Less than $100... For just a cruddy linux box, I think i'll just do this.

Thanks for all the help!

I don't know which HD graphics the Pentium G3220 uses as ARK only says HD graphics. Not like an i3 4330 which uses HD 4600. The A6 6400K has the better integrated graphics. I would say that both are better than a HD 5450. The Pentium G3220 is quite a bit faster than the A6 6400K adn would give you a much better experience in everyday tasks. The HD graphics on the Pentium G3220 are not as powerful as the i3 4330 But it may be more similar to the HD 4400 or even 4000. The Radeon HD 5450 would be fine for Media playback. But so would each of the APUs. It s really your call. If you want much better single threaded and noticably better multi-threaded performance then the G3220 is the way to go.

The HD5450 would be a LOT better than the Pentium's igpu, but not as good as the A6-6400k, but the A6 would require the faster RAM like you said.

This would be cool

Thank you so much! Kabini looks really cool, but as for Linux support, I might have a very hard time getting around...

I just decided to save my money and go a bit older: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BN17ZM/ref=oh_deta...

I got it for $55, comes with an unknown CPU to protect the pins. Haha I might already be regretting buying it returning to this forum now, but whatever, I build an i5 build a year from now or so :D

This way, I can use my old RAM and CPUs laying around, without throwing away stuff. The Core 2 Duo E8600 or whatever I decide to pair with it won't beat a Haswell Pentium (not too far though), but that with the HD 5450 won't be bad.

All i'm doing is booting Ubuntu and Arch or whatever, so it should breeze through!

Sorry for the boring conclusion. Have a good one!

I don't know which iGPu is on the Pentium G. So I would be able to compare. I had HD 6450 I could barley play broderlands (2009) at 1024x768 paired with an Athlon II 240. I Did say the i3 4330 HD 4600 is better than a HD 5450 though
