Hi everyone, I know this question has probably been done to death but I just thought I'd ask just in case for specifics :)

Where I live (Australia) the aftermarket versions of the GTX 780 are on average $100 more than aftermarket versions of the r9 290. Now I've heard that the performance between the two are incredibly similar, differing in certain aspects. Considering I game, edit, and render, is the 780 worth the $100 premium? Also if anyone has any personal recommendations on which aftermarket version of EITHER card that would be great. Keep in mind I'm running on a 600W Corsair PSU and I don't intend to do any serious overclocking in the very near future.

I wouldn't say the premium is worth the 780 considering their performance is similar. I would go with the R9 290, and either the Asus or the Sapphire Tri-X edition.

Plus, since the R9 290 has more VRAM, it'd be better in higher resolutions.
Games at the moment are pushing 2GB VRAM or are almost there, so the 3GB could become a limitation on the 780 in the future.

What is your resolution? Personally I prefer AMD cards for their price/performance advantage and with Mantle support growing aswell as AMD support on both the new consoles, it seems like a good idea. The ASUS R9 290x Direct CU II OC is a cracking card and slightly more VRAM (4GB) incase you do want higher res in the future. Also what are the rest of your specs?

I'm running 1920x1080 at the moment, possibly 4k later on when it's less expensive :p  My computer is a little old as it is, I'm upgrading it piece by piece:

i7 870
Asus P7P55D-E Motherboard
8G of Corsair Vengeance 1333mhz
600W Corsair PSU
Radeon 6850 Powercolor GFX

GFX card upgrade first, then Mobo and CPU :)

I'd say an R9 290x then, and if you want 4K/Multi monitor when you've fully upgraded maybe buy a second one.

Most definitely the R9 290 then(since that's what you specified) but if your budget can stretch, then 290x.

Thanks! You think the 290x is worth about a $140 price jump? For example the Tri-X versions of both are $519 for the 290 and $698 for the 290x=/ Also I can pick up a Gigabyte 780 for around $580. Gigabytes seem to be a lot cheaper compared to the others, any reason?

Sorry, i'm looking at UK prices. Here a ASUS R9 290x is about 30-40 pounds cheaper Than a GTX 780, The small performance increase will be very noticeable when and if you go to 4K, anything less than that though and the R9 290 will suit your needs.

No, it's not worth it. Stick to the R9 290. Trust me : )
