I am in the market for a new graphics card. I like the look of AMD with free sync around the corner and sapphire's tri-x design.

I will undoubtedly crossfire and need to know whether two r9 290X's would perform much better than two r9 290's.

In the UK the prices of Tri-x r9 290 is £284 compared to £359 for the Tri-x r9 290X showing a price difference of £75 for each card and a saving of £150 if I choose to crossfire the r9 290 version.

Can i ultimately justify the £150 price increase? How much more performance would I realistically achieve? Thankyou

At those resolutions, a single 290x will pull that off. If you want to be more future proof and try to get all of those 120 fps, you could easily get the 290 in crossfire to save some money over the 290x. They could handle 1440p without breaking a sweat.

I'm not a massive fan of overclocking GPUs simply because I'm not that experienced with it and wouldn't want to run the risk of damaging any components.

Thanks for this. Was planning on posting a really similar thread and it seems starting with a R9 290 would be best and then getting a second one to futureproof when the time comes. Awesome.

I've read quite a few comments saying it is worth buying the 290x for higher resolutions which I will be doing in the future. I am the kind of person that likes the best of the best so will probably cough up the extra £75 but thank you for all the advice

I wish we had some benchmarks comparing them both in crossfire. I just wonder if that gap between the two cards would double in crossfire or remain constant if you get what I'm saying !

Fantastic thread. Really glad I read this. Was absolutely certain I'd get a R9 290x as it seems the best way forward but really a R9 290 doesn't really struggle that much behind and considering probably never going to be using multiple monitors for gaming I think it should be fine!

Now to hunt for a good aftermarket cooled R9 290.

Right now the best R9 290 you can get is the Gigabyte 290 OC Edition. It has a 1040 oc on it and with out upping the voltage you can get to 1080 on the core.

The memory doesn't need any oc since 1250 is ample and anything over it is more like adding a pretty paint job to the inside of the card. Though if you must the gigabyte card has first tier hynex memory and will oc with ease.

I would say the next best card is the vapor-x it is not very good looking and uses more like 3 slots to achieve the same temps as the Gigabyte Wind Force 3 card that is more streamlined and runs quieter and at the same temps. The vram is also cooled better on the Gigabyte card and it uses a better PCB with 2x the copper.

I've been looking at these cards for well over 2 months now and after all the reviews and reading forums. It's easy to say Gigabyte has the best cooling system for the 290/x
