Hello readers. Recently I've encountered an issue with my computer and I have to say that I am stumped.
I was browsing the internet (doing nothing intensive) on my computer, when it randomly decided to shut down, as if someone pressed the power button. I then restarted the computer and all was fine. However, within a short amount of time, the issue happened again.
The next day, the computer worked perfectly. I put the system under load (2 hours of playing Last Light on maximum settings) without hiccups.
After this, the issue escalated. My computer froze completely (completely unresponsive to any input). When I held down the power button, the system shut off and immediately powered back up again, but the system failed to POST. I had to turn the power supply off and on in order to get it to POST again. I decided not to take any chances, shutting off the computer before I fried anything.
Any ideas why this issue occurs? Computer specs are as follows:
- AMD 1055T
- ASUS M4A89GTD/PRO (usb3 model)
- 2 x HD 5850
- OCZ ModXStream 700W PSU
- 8 gigabytes of XMS3-1600MHz
- Samsung Spinpoint F3 hard drive, and a generic DVDROM drive.
I have checked both the voltages and the temperatures; both seem to be well within spec. I have not made any changes to the BIOS (everything's been at default settings, working fine). The computer is also relatively free of dust.
The computer is about 3 to 4 years of age and has seen pretty heavy use. I have visually inspected the components, and everything seems to be fine.
My guess is that the PSU is going bad. Help is appreciated! I am already thinking of getting a high quality Corsair PSU, but I'd like to hear some input first before I make any rash decisions.
