This is a problem that only began occuring recently in my ~2 year old XPS-17 laptop
Roughly a month ago, when running on battery power, the screen began flickering and tugging from side to side before eventually black screening.

The problem would disappear after either sending to sleep and reloading or plugging in so I assumed this was simply due to my aged battery (down to ~20 mins life on a 9 cell) so I ordered a new one which hasn't yet arrived.

However, over the last 2 days, the problem has extended to even when I have the laptop plugged in, whether I have a battery inserted or not, but the symptoms have changed slightly.

When stressing the system with games, movies, or even loading multiple pages of tabs on chrome at once, when I close out of these programs and sometimes, but not always when they are currently running, the screen will flicker severely and intel graphics will continuously crash and reload.
Sometimes it stabilizes, sometimes it blackscreens and I have to hard restart. At times it persists even through a hard reset and I have to uninstall and reinstall the intel driver for it to stabilize.

Any help with identifying what's actually going on here would be greatly appreciated.

My specs:
intel core i7-2670qm @ 2.20ghz
8GB ram
Windows 8.1 x64
Nvidia GT 555M, Intel HD graphics 3000 in optimus
