CPU Temp After New Heatsink Install

Hey all,
I just upgraded my cpu cooler from the stock intel to a CM hyper 212 evo. I do have a concern regarding the temps though. Even when the computer is idle, the temps seem to jump around a fair deal. According to realtemp, it will be 25c one second then up to 34c the next then down and so on. I assume maybe I goofed somewhere, maybe with the thermal paste or something as this was my first attempt at a heatsink install. That being said, I still haven't seen it go beyond 60c even with an OC. As long as its not getting too hot do I need to worry about the jumpy temps?

Open task manager and rant the programs on the process tab by CPU.... (pr look at performance tab) I bet there is some activity going on..... Bad TIM application might raise temps but not bounce them around.

Run Intel burn test this will give you the max temp it will ever hit and if thats fine don't worry.

sorry to have to ask, but how do you rate programs by psu in the process tab?

Honestly with the way today's cpus work(many clock speeds for different loads). These sudden clock ups when needed can raise the temperatures.

For example, my media center will jump from 35-41(much older i5 750) just from opening the main tomshardware page on chrome, but settles right back down.

I think what you are experiencing is normal.

A load test will not take long to give you an idea of how well the cooler is working.

Typo .... CPU .... it defaults to order by name, just click on the header to reorder for any column.

Thanks for all the advice. I just ran the prime blended test for an hour and a half and my max temp under full load was 76 degrees which seems about right. I know I should run longer tests but that gives me an idea of how the new heat sink is performing.

Well for most users prime is hotter than any normal activity they will do.

I've also messed around with a few games that really rasied my cpu temps with the stock cooler and I'm seeing a pretty big improvement. Far Cry 3 had my cpu around 80 degress and the hyper evo is now keeping it in the mid 50's. much better. I just don't really get why the temps are jumping around at idle. I didn't pay that much attention to it before but I don't think it jumped around as much with the stock cooler. very weird.

It is possible the new cooler allows the temperature to drop back down faster so it looks like a spike when a load is applied and then stops.

I have seen this for a long time, but do not use the stock coolers on anything so can not compare.

This is loading the Tom's Hardware main site. so you see that the cpu uses many different clock speeds and changes very fast, this is most likely why you see such sudden rise and falls.

Also note that for a long time temperatures had been taken from the socket and not within the cpu. These temperatures changed slower and read about 10-15c too low in many cases.

Very informative, thanks. As long as my temps are in a reasonable range and stable under load I don't think I'll worry too much.
