Hi! I'm a first time builder and total novice, but after growing frustrated with my last few computers, I figured I'd take matters into my own hands. Due to being a student living in a very small space -- and falling in love with the Bitfenix case -- I've decided that a mini-ITX is definitely the way to go.

Just as a disclaimer: I'm not a gamer, but I do want a machine that can perform. Being in the medical field, I need a computer that can render large 3D protein complexes, do some biomedical imaging and -- because genomes are big things -- allow me to save a lot of data. To make things even more difficult, I go crazy from fan noise, and really want something that will allow me to work undisturbed.

Would it be possible for the m-ITX to fit all of the above? I do like to watch a movie now and then, and inveted in a small surround sound system, so having a dedicated sound card would be wonderful. Nevertheless, I'd rather not remove the upper HDD case, if I can help it. I do a lot of storage and time consuming work and I've had HDDs fail me before, so I feel like I need to back up a lot of what I do, hence I need extra storage room. I was thinking of getting a boot SSD and 2 or 3 internal HDDs. Budget-wise, I'm fairly flexible.

Am I asking too much, or is it doable?

Those medical imaging programs use as much and more power than gaming. So a roomy case with good airflow is important. The Asus Impact would be a fine MoBo for your needs and I'd put it in a NZXT CA-PH240-W1

My son just graduated and spent his 1st year in a dorm with a large full tower.... same as his roomie and the 2 guys across the hall.

Small mid tower cases I'd look at include

Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-03
Corsair Carbide Series Air 540
Antec Three Hundred Illusion

I'd do that too, but alas, I'm a bit further ahead and I'll be moving around at least five times within the next 12 months, and it might be more than that. Hospital residences tend to be pretty tightly packed. It'd be really nice to have something small and portable, but I guess I can make the space sacrifice.

Not all mid towers are created equal.... typically talking about 2" bigger.

Prodigy - 15.91" x 9.84" x 14.13"
Air 540 - 18" x 13" x 16"
