How do I enable surround sound on my PC?

I have a Radeon HD 270 graphics card and an Asus P8H77-V LE motherboard, which should i connect my home theatre to to be able to change my output channels from 2 to 5.1 as no matter what I try i cannot find any settings.

The sound card options should have a lot of settings you can pick from for the sound outputs. Where are you looking at for the sound settings and how are you connecting the system to the receiver?

In audio settings on the task bar and clicking configure speakers only shows 2 channels, connecting via optic cable

Aside from a BIOS and driver update if needed from here https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8H77V_LE/HelpDesk_Do... you may need to check with the support from ASUS. I don't see any specific manual for the sound options.
