My bro had his WD Black 1tb HDD die, are they not as reliable as people say they are?

He's looking for a replacement and originally I suggested the Crucial m500 120gb SSD for his boot drive for windows 7 and get a WD Blue 1tb since they're decent and only 60 bucks.

I've never had a HDD die on me in personal experience, are the Blacks not as good as people hype them up to be? It has to literally be the best touted HDD I've heard of when reading online, yet in reviews I see them dying just as much as the "crappy" Seagate barracudas that people like to rag on.

He changed his mind and is set on getting the 240gb Crucial m500 SSD with a 1tb WD Black HDD as the storage drive for his games. I think he should save 20 bucks and just get a WD Blue HDD.

What has been everybody's personal experience with the new 1tb platter 7200rpm 64mb cache WD Blue HDD compared to WD Black 1tb? It seems the Black isn't as infallible as people make it out to be. I thought of finding him a WD RE4 hdd as they're enterprise grade, but the price is too much, he could get a 3tb seagate for the same price as a 1tb RE4

for the same price as the WD Black 1tb costs, he could get a 2tb seagate barracuda, but I've honestly heard of those HDD's dropping like flies too. I guess it's good there's really nothing of great value I keep on the HDD, just steam games and pics/music , same as him. It saddens me to pay for a HDD and it just die out of nowhere.

WD Black is about performance, not reliability. If you want reliability, get a server drive. If anything, I'd say they're less reliable due to higher acceleration stresses and lower production volumes.

Also, it's probably still in warranty. Send it back for an RMA.

Get a barracuda or a blue; there's little point in anything else these days for bulk storage.

EDIT: Also, a sample size of one is useless for any guess as to reliability.

I've had great reliablity with the blacks. When you say that it is failing, is this an opinion or have you examined the SMART data? I find that most people who claim that their drive is failing are guessing because the symptoms appear to be drive related, and they are not necessarly so.

HDD sentinel says it has like 10% health left, and 88 bad sectors I believe. A couple smart errors too from what I remember. Been a couple weeks since I checked. He still hasn't RMA'd it but ended up getting an ssd OS drive and WD black 2tb for bulk storage of games

I ordered him a 2tb toshiba originally and then received the wrong model even though the box said the good model I wanted. The model I ordered had good reviews but the HDD I received has a bad reputation.

As for the wd black going bad, I guess I could chalk it up to newegg shoddy packaging or rough handling by either them or UPS.

It surprised me because I've never had a HDD die...salvaged two OLD seagates in another desktop and they're showing up 100% health fine in HDD sentinel.

I knew something was up with my bro's pc because it was taking FOREVER to boot up

just haven't RMA'd it because WD wanted us to pay for something to suspend it in mid air, bubble wrap, anti static and the container itself, plus shipping.....looked on amazon how much it costs for anti static and bubble wrap and said nope........it cost more to RMA it then to just buy a new drive basically =/ and I'd just get back a refurbed drive anyway, and we all know how bad those are with their notorious failure rate
