SYSTEM: Dell Alienware Aurora R3
OS: Windows 7
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2600 (8MB Cache) Overclocked Turbo Boost to 3.9GHz
Memory: 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
Video Card: 1GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460 (original)

Dell has activated kill switch after friend fell behind in payments (hospitalized, long term). It occurred via update. Clued in by service tech after I called to find out why he was locked out of his account page.

Unsure what anyone can do to help with problem, but I do know it was fixable on XP in 2004. Windows 7 set up differently and command line repairs used then are being stonewalled now.

Then: command line edits involving root access, boot.ini changes.

Now: files and cmd functions renamed, hidden and who knows ...even written in self-destructing code? Haven't used Windows since 2004 so I am not up to speed on changes.

Tried: bcdedit opt out, reformatting, replaced video card, replaced monitor.

Symptoms: video display corrupt. Even safe mode is virtually impossible to use. Only partial program windows viewable. No access to repair tools, command center functions. Command line seems limited, no access to boot.ini.

The repair is for disabled, housebound friend. Computer is pretty much their only access to the world. Any helpful guidance would be deeply appreciated.

This thread is borderline suspect in the same way we might treat password cracking issues. The matter is between your friend and Dell and probably involves getting the payments up to date. It seems the only help you can help is financial help.

I'm closing the thread to other responses pending consideration by the other members of the Moderation Team.

EDIT: The concensus is that the issues your friend has are nothing to do with Dell or any conspiracy theory about its ability to kill a system remotely.

The thread is now reopened for advice on how to deal with the malware which has attacked the computer. The Dell recovery partition would probably help. To retrieve his or her personal files, try Safe mode with Command Prompt...
