Hello

I bought a pre-built desktop for good value but the motherboard is rather limited(I think its Asus H87M or similar) ; no OC control and XMP profiles seem broken so memory sticks I just bought are limited to 1333mhz.
I am thinking about upgrading motherboards to z97 (looking at Asus Z97-A) and my question is will it be a simple swap and everything should boot or will there be issues with Windows 8.1 and having to re install?

Would it help if I installed all the drivers for z97-a before I swapped motherboards?
I also dual-boot linux which I'm assuming should detect and load new driver modules fine.

Thanks

like peckata 2 said you should have to install a new window there is no way you can install new boards drivers on old board because when you try to install driver for new board it will say not compatible because it can not found the chipset or any hardware you are trying to download software for so install a new windows

Alright thanks!
I was under the impression the new drivers would install and just not load until I installed the new board.

Just hoping I can be lazy I guess. Motherboard is on its way and I have my Windows recovery on a USB now so I should be good.

No reinstall needed. After swapping motherboards, Windows booted and gave a "Getting devices" message and started up fine. Just missing some drivers which I installed from the Asus DVD.

And linux actually took more work as grub Bootloader was gone and I needed to reinstall that, but overall a smooth upgrade.

What CPU you using now... if you already use i7 then ok to change MB to do more on overclock ... but if you only have i3 or i5 then just change to an i7 instead waste the money on the main board for overclocking.. and if your CPU is not K version .. you still not able to overclock..

i7 non-k but I'm not gonna OC CPU. Only got new mobo since old one had no AI tweaker and refused to run memory higher than 1333mhz. Memory speeds seemed to be the main bottleneck for compiling my projects.

H87M-E Support DDR3 1600 Memory ... is your original Memory is 1333 and you mean you want to overclock to 1600..? even your memory move from 1333 to 1600 your window Performance index may increase 0.1 and your overall performance will only increase less than 3%... Totally not worth.. But is up to you .. when you feel your system slow ... people won't upgrade the MB to improve the performance ... if you don't have SSD yet spent the MB price to a 240GB SSD will give you PC a Boost!
