So my optical drive has started to play up.

It plays cds and blu ray discs fine but when I put in a dvd disc it doesnt seem to read them. I can hear the drive making a noise as if its trying to read something but its not loading.

I have tried deleting the upper/lower filters in regedit and also reinstalled the driver by uninstalling the driver and restarting the machine but still doesnt work.
I have tried an original dvd movie disc and that loads up fine but when I try a dvd disc that I have burnt it doesnt seem to load or recognize a blank dvd so that I can burn something new.

Note- I recently upgraded the memory in the laptop, not sure if that could have affected it

Hope someone can help

Thanks

The memory upgrade is highly unlikely to have made a difference. It is most likely a hardware problem with the drive itself - is it under warranty?

No its not under warranty

But if original bluray, original dvd, normal cds and copied cds work but not copied dvd discs, would that not be a software problem? As the others work but not copied or blank dvds

Have yout tried an alternative brand of blank DVDs? They can be pretty bad for working with some drives but not others.... In a work situation I was once given a DVDwriter that we eventually ditched because we could only find one single brand of blank DVDs that it would reliably work with...

Yea I have tried another brand dvd which I recorded on to with the same optical drive but now it doesnt read it.

Its quite a random problem for it to all of a sudden stop reading black/recordable dvd discs when it was working fine before.

Is there any other testing I can do to see if its a hardware or software problem?

No that I know of - do run a full malware and antivurs check of course, but if the PC is otherwise working fine, and this is the only problem, and it was working before, and nothing else has been changed, I would presume the drive itslef is faulty

How old is it?

The disks that it won't read - have you another drive you can try them with, just to be absolutely sure it's not the discs

One final thing - make sure your antivirus program isn't scanning the discs when you insert them - many antivirus programs, Bitdefender being one example, will be default be set to scan disks as soon as you insert them, but while it is doing it those discs will be very slow for the computer to read

Its a few years old now, around 3/4 years

I dont have another drive but I can try them in another laptop to see if they work on there. Will try that and update you.

Is there a way to reinstall all the associated software, registry etc etc of the drive from scratch without having to do a full restore?

It depends a little bit on your setup - if it's a Dell for example it would be worth checking their support pages. You may even find you can get some help from a human even if you're out of warranty
