Local area connection competing for tethered internet

I have an intranet that I use for work email. When I plug this into my computer via ethernet cable it is labled as Local Area Connection. This intranet does not allow access to the Internet, so I also have my iPhone tethered to my computer to provide Internet. My iPhone is tethered to my computer via USB. It is labeled as Local Area Connection 3. The problem is that when I plug in the ethernet cable to connect to the intranet, it's like the intranet's local area connection takes over from my tethered connection and the computer tries to access the Internet through the wrong network ignoring my iPhone. As soon as I unplug the cable, my iPhone's internet connection returns immediately. How do I force my computer (or Firefox if that's the way to do this) to look for the internet from Local Area Connection 3 instead of the ethernet cable's Local Area Connection?

It depends how complex your "intranet" network is. If it is a single subnet all you do is remove the default gateway from that network. You can do it via network settings or use the ROUTE DELETE command to delete the 0.0.0.0 route on the INTRANET interface. If your "intranet" is more complex you are going to have to use the ROUTE ADD command to put in the subnets you need after you remove the default route
