can i use target display mode using a mini displayport cable (1 end in iMac) 1 end in a MDP to DVI adapter?
the reason i want to do this is because i have an old iMac (mid 2011) that is a 27inch display and is 2560x1440p, and I'm building a new gaming rig and i really really don't want to buy a new monitor because i want to game at 1440p i only have a 1080p monitor.

and well I'm here... will the gtx 780 be able to run games like skyrim, mass effect 2/1 at medium quality at 1440p or can the gtx 780 run a game like bio-shock infinite at high quality running at 2560x1440p?

Solution
So with the imac, you want to use the screen and not the actual mac itself?

This has been done with other macs, but if it works with another Mac, it should also work with a PC. A MDP to DVI cable should be all you need.

Apple stated this;

"Connect any computer or other device with a Mini DisplayPort to your 27-inch iMac using a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable or using a converter that converts other electrical, video, and audio protocols from another source device to Mini DisplayPort compliant signals."

So yes, it'll work.

The GTX 780 can game at 1440p quite well, though in some games you may find you'll have to tone down graphics settings to medium.
