completely confused with dvi to vga on a gtx 645

I just wanna make sure I get the right cable or dongle

my monitor has a vga port and has a usb port its a AOC 2436

my graphics card is a gtx 645 which supports - One Dual Link DVI-I, One Dual Link DVI-D, One HDMI, One DisplayPort

I currently have a dvi-a adapter which worked with my old graphics card 5450 connected to the monitor above and worked fine but this adapter dvi-a does not work on the new card gtx 645.

I have ordered a dvi-I to vga adapter from amazon will this work with the new card and if so which dvi port should it be connected too as they both look the same.

or will I need a usb/vga dongle as well to hook up to the display port ?

so confused please help.

I literally just wanna hook up my pc to my current monitor and wanna make sure I don't waste cash buying cables and dongles I don't need

any help will be appreciated thanks

just get a DVI-D cable to HDMI, DVI-I dual link is pretty much the same as DVI-D dual link, both cables will work vice versa.

If your monitor got only VGA port use DVI-I to VGA cable you ordered.

Difference between DVI-D and DVI-I you can see in 4 little sockets on the side.
You can see it on picture (link to image found on google).

Those 4 pins you will find also on DVI-I end of cable and those 4 are responssible for analog signal.

EDIT:
I'm not sure how it's with DVI-A plug to DVI-I, but if you plug it into DVI-I connector it should work I think. You were probably trying to put it into DVI-D socket because you saw no difference, but those 4 pins prevented you to plug it so you can try again your DVI-A adapter and it should work.

Male DVI-D to Female VGA Adapter. The Male DVI-D to Female VGA Adapter is designed for digital-to-analog converter machine only. And it can not change digital data to analog data directly.

VGA is analog, DVI-D is digital, this adaptor alone can't convert it, you would need converter.
So best bet is DVI-I to VGA or DVI-A to VGA.

the ports on the graphics card both look like dvi-I (dual link) they both have the 4 pins on the left they are identical.

the other 2 ports on the card are hdmi and dp

Most classic is one is DVI-I and one DVI-D setup. But if you can see 5 holes on side of socket you can try to use that DVI-A to VGA adaptor it should work. If you will be able to plug it but won't be able to make it work just wait for DVI-I to VGA cable that one should work on 99,9%

will work with a DVI-D, same connection option, thanks to the above image. DVI-D cable will fit in DVI-I if both dual link.

Yes that one won't work. That is for converters. Read description on amazon page or edit of my 1st post.

You can't directly link analog and digital signal without some sort of conversion.

I guess more people do not agree with you and also those selling it on amazon do not agree with you so I don't know how else to respond to that. There may be some monitor which may somehow support digital dvi signal on vga port if it's wired that way inside, BUT can't imagine reason why to do that.
So general rule of usage is dvi-D (digital) do not work directly with VGA (analog).

To leaonardo22:
Just use DVI-A to VGA or DVI-I to VGA either direct cable or adapter.

ill wait for this dvi-I to vga adapter to arrive hopefully it work

I also been googling around a lot apparently I will have to spend a lot of money on either a new monitor or a sca-vga-dvi grrrr

last time I bother upgrading a gpu lol
